The Modern is an exclusive 20-room boutique hotel and luxury spa retreat tucked away in a quiet, reserved section of New York's Upper East Side. Grounded in a concept where each guest room features a distinct, immersive color theme, the hotel was developed to offer working professionals a restorative, design-forward sanctuary just blocks from Central Park.

With an average room rate of $400–$800 per night, The Modern sits in Manhattan's highly competitive mid-range boutique market. To defend its market share against sterile, corporate mid-tier hotels and legacy chains, the brand needed a visual system that punched far above its weight class.
The challenge was to leverage the hotel's defining physical asset, its unique, color-themed interior design, into a cohesive brand identity that establishes premium visual positioning, fosters rapid social media recognition, and justifies upper-tier pricing during peak holiday seasons.
The goal was to translate the hotel's interior vibe into a clean, scalable brand. The client wanted bold color and clean lines without losing a high-end feel, so I balanced crisp, architectural geometry with structured blocks of color.
A custom monogram keeps the branding sophisticated, while a flexible checkerboard pattern scales across everything, from booking screens to physical menus and spa packaging. It's a functional framework that instantly elevates the guest experience into a curated, boutique stay.

The client brief requested a look defined by 'simple lines and structure.' In response, I designed the primary brand mark on a geometric grid, reflecting both the architectural layout of the Upper East Side and the structural lines of the hotel's modern interior design. The resulting mark balances rigid corporate sophistication with a timeless, boutique silhouette.
